To some who were certain of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—cheaters, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I possess’ “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Luke 18:9–14

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession of faith …[and] with confidence approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace in time of need” Hebrews 4:14-16

“If you don’t know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else.” –Baseball Legend, Yogi Berra

“You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!” John 5:39

“Do not think that I came to cancel the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to cancel but to fulfill. Assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen will pass from the law till all is fulfilled... [but, just like our Parable today, “I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.”  —Jesus, Matthew 5:17–20

Fulfill: To bring to a designated end or conclusion, to finish!

But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. Galatians 3:23–24

All are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. Romans 3:24

Justified: “Just as if I never did wrong”

When God speaks of a “new” covenant, it means he has made the first one obsolete. It is now out of date and will soon disappear.  Hebrews 8:13

Jesus also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. Luke 22:20

After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished...said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.  John 19:28–30; Matthew 27:51

Now all of us can come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us. Ephesians 2:18

1. I am no longer bound to the law and prophets

Everyone who believes in Jesus is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses. Acts 13:39

2. Look for Jesus in the Law and Prophets

“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? They pierced My hands and My feet; I can count all My bones. They look and stare at Me. They divide My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.” Psalm 22:11, 16–8

3. God still speaks through the law and prophets

For the word of God is alive and active.  Hebrews 4:12

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 2 Timothy 3:16

Is there a command to follow or an error to avoid?

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.”  —Jesus, John 13:3

“I will give you another Helper [By that he meant the Holy Spirit] whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” –Jesus, John 14:26

To some who were certain of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: Luke 18:9

Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.  Romans 13:8
