Why Baptism?
1. To follow the example set by Christ
As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. Matthew 3:16
2. To show what Christ has done for us
Christ died for our sins... He was buried... and He rose again. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
In baptism we show that we have been saved from death by the resurrection of Christ…not because our bodies are washed clean by the water but because in being baptized we are turning to God and asking him to cleanse our hearts from sin. 1 Peter 3:21
If anyone is in Christ, he becomes a new person inside. The old life has passed away and a new life has begun! 2 Corinthians 5:17
Barrier: “I was already baptized as a child.”
Those hearing, believed and were baptized. Acts 18:8
Barrier: “Does it have to be immersion in water?”
“This sacrament is called Baptism, after the central rite by which it is carried out: To baptize (Greek: baptizein) means to ‘plunge’ or ‘immerse’; the 'plunge' into the water symbolizes the [new believer’s] burial into Christ's death, from which he rises up by resurrection with him, as ‘a new creature.’” Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1214
“Baptism properly speaking is done by an immersion of the candidate in water or by the pouring of water over his head.” Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1239
“Since the beginning of the Church, adult Baptism is the common practice where the proclamation of the Gospel is still new.’ Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1247
“Immersion brings out more fully the meaning of baptism and that for twelve centuries it was the common practice.” St. Thomas Aquinas
“I would have those who are to be baptized to be entirely immersed, as the work imports and the mystery signifies.” Martin Luther
“The word ‘baptize’ signifies to immerse. Immersion was the practice of the ancient church.” John Calvin
“Buried with Him, alludes to baptizing by immersion according to the custom of the first church.” John Wesley
Barrier: “I’ll be embarrassed/Getting hair wet/People seeing me/What will people think?”
4. To identify with Christ publicly
For when you were baptized, you were buried with Christ, and in baptism, you were also raised with Christ. Colossians 2:12
“Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.” —Jesus, Matthew 10:32–33
Someone may say, “I am a Christian; I am on my way to heaven; I belong to Christ.” But if he doesn’t do what Christ tells him to, he is a liar. 1 John 2:4, TLB
As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the officer said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?” So the official ordered the And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the official went down into the water and Philip baptized him. Acts 8:36
“What can stand in the way of you being baptized?”
Those hearing, believed and were baptized. Acts 18:8
